Mazal Tov to Amanda Haworth
Mazal Tov to Amanda Haworth, daughter of Barbara and Gordon Haworth on receiving one of five Diller Teen Tikkun Olam Awards. The Award seeks to recognize teens who are exceptional role models in their communities and beyond. Amanda observed that students at her school were not educated about the Holocaust and could be intolerant of individuals and of groups of people. She began a program for Holocaust education/tolerance at her high school by funding a trip for students to visit the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles. Amanda raised over $12,000 to fund the trip for the entire junior class (410 students plus adults). The trip to the Museum of Tolerance was incorporated into the students curriculum with students now attending while in middle school.

CBI Teen Kavod Honor Society
On June 8th, at the family Shabbat Service, we
honored our teens. All year long, our teens participate
in so many ways, both in Jewish Life, and
in the life of Congregation Beth Israel. From CBI
High to choir and from BITY to the Jewish Film
Festival, our teens are actively leading and living
Jewish lives.
A year ago, Michelle Berkowitz and Dr. Raben
created a way to honor the teens of CBI for their
commitment to Jewish Life. They created a list of
20+ programs, services, events that they can
participate in over the course of the school year.
If students achieved at least 14 of the 20+
items, they self-selected to become inductees to
our new CBI Teen Kavod Honor Society. At the
service on June 8th, they were called up to the
bimah to receive a framed certificate and Havdallah
candle. Additionally, a plaque is being created
and will be hung in the CBI foyer for all to see.
Each year, we will add new members, and this
plaque will grow with the names of our most active
Jewish Teens.
Its with great pride we congratulate and honor
the following teens who range from 8th-12th
grade:
| |
Rachel S., Amanda G., Kelly E.,
Sophie V., Brian D., Joe W., Ari R.,
Maddy J., Penny J., Abbi H.,
Danny M., and Jared R. |
Also honored on this night were the 3 graduating
Seniors from CBI High. These are students who attended
Religious School all the way through their
senior year of high school. Congratulations and best
of luck in college, ladies:

Our Madrichim are a significant and important part of
our Religious School Community. Our trained teens
spend hours in the elementary aged classes, as well
as acting as counselors when we go to Religious
School Camps. We couldn't do it without them! Thank
you to all our Madrichim for a year of hard work,
commitment, and beautiful dedication to the youth of
CBI. Special thanks also to Eemah (Helene Schlafman)
for her training and guidance of all our Madrichim.

A Graduating Madricha's Experience
Ever since I was in fourth grade at a weekend
retreat with my synagogue I knew I
wanted to be involved in the Madrichim
(student leader) program. I could not wait
until I would finally be a part of the program
when I reached eighth grade.
Although I was involved in my faith, I did not
particularly want to continue my Jewish education
past my Bat Mitzvah in seventh grade.
What kept me going was the thought that in
eighth grade I would have the opportunity to
be in the Madrichim class. On this thought, I
returned to religious school only thinking
about Madrichim.
That year was by far the best year I had ever
had at religious school. Madrichim has kept me coming back to my temple ever since,
rekindling my passion for the Jewish religion.
Also, I have made some of my best friends
through this program. Each year our bond
grows stronger and I am sad to have to leave
them at the end of this year.
In Madrichim, we plan the fourth and fifth
grade weekend retreat every year. As an
eighth grader, it is one of the best new activities
to experience. Every year returning Madrichim
look forward to fourth and fifth grade
camp.
For the rest of the year before camp, ninth
through twelfth grade Madrichim work in the
elementary level classes. Every year I have
taught third grade, and it is a rewarding and invigorating experience. Working with children
has become a passion of mine over the years
and it still hasn't sunk in that I don't have a
next year with these kids.
Although I love working with children so much, I
don't see my career going in that direction. In
college, I am going to study biology with the
hope of becoming a physical therapist or working
in another area of physical rehabilitation.
Even though I am leaving for college, I hope to
remain involved with my temple here in San
Diego as well as become involved with one at
my school. I know nothing will ever completely
fill the void of finally graduating from this life
changing experience, but I would do it all over
again if I had the chance.
