The third Friday of each month brings a new, ever changing experience to CBI, presented by the ALEINU/Adult Learners Network in conjunction with synagogue committees. The programs take place immediately following a 7:30 p.m. abbreviated Kabbalat Shabbat service. No fee or RSVP needed.

Our annual Social Action Shabbat welcomes Rabbi Leonard Beerman, the founding rabbi of Leo Baeck Temple in Los Angeles. Rabbi Beerman was a cofounder of the Interfaith Center to Reverse the Arms Race, which became a joint project of his temple and All Saints Church. He has lectured widely in academic institutions, synagogues, churches and mosques on issues of peace and justice and has been honored with numerous awards.


Film Presentation "West Bank Story"

A 20-minute musical comedy set in the fast-paced, fast-food world of competing falafel stands on the West Bank. An Israeli soldier falls in love with the competitors beautiful Palestinian cashier. Can the couple's love withstand a centuries old conflict?

Interfaith Dialogue with Rabbi Michael Berk and Reverend Monsginor Dennis Mikulanis

Rabbi Berk and Monsignor Dennis Mikulanis offered insights into their respective religion's point of view on the topic "If God is Good, Why Do We Suffer?" The discussion followed an abbreviated Kabbalat Shabbat service and a Q&A afterward was moderated by our own Irv Kass.

The Music of Andy Mayer

Extraordinary pianist, versatile composer and a CBI volunteer of the year, Andy Mayer is featured in CBI’s Chai band at Friday Night Chai services, Family Services and often at Soul Food Shabbat. His captivating Jewish and liturgical music brings together old and new sounds of Jewish life and reaches deeply into the soul of the listener. He shared many of his compositions at this event and the Shabbat service featured his prayer settings. Also featured was the CBI Chai Band, Cantor Bernstein, Andy’s wife, Heidi Gantwerk and Tracy Hirschfeld.
