The Friday Night Chai Band consists of an enthusiastic group of excellent musicians, all of whom are congregants at Beth Israel.

Andy Mayer, Piano

Over the years Andy has played with many different ensembles ranging from chamber groups to jazz and rock bands. Andy is married to singer-extraordinaire Heidi Gantwerk and has three sons, Isaac, Sebastian and Gabriel, who are students in Beth Israel's Religious School.

Abbi Hirschfeld, Flute
Abbi Hirschfeld is 15 years old sings in the CBI Youth and Teen Choirs in addition to being a regular member of the Chai Band. Musical theater is another interest of hers, and she has performed several roles with the J Company Youth Theater and at La Jolla Country Day. Abbi is also an accomplished pianist. She has recently taken up the guitar, with the goal of becoming a song leader.

Jeff Myers, Cello
Jeff Myers is a Commander in the United States Navy, where as a pilot, he has flown almost 1900 hours, principally in helicopters. During his last deployment, he was Officer-in-Charge of a group providing direct combat support during Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.

Jeff is also a classically-trained cellist. He now enjoys the challenge offered by the more improvisational nature of the jazz and rock styles that have found their way into the current liturgical melodies. He is appreciative to Cantor Bernstein, the CBI Rabbis, and the other members of the band for the opportunity to increase the spirituality and meaningfulness of the Jewish experience through music. Jeff's wife, Perla, and children, Daniel and Rebecca, share his love of music.

Lou Rosen, Bass Guitar
Lou Rosen is a physician by day, working in the field of pain management and physical rehabilitation. Musician whenever he can, Lou is a proponent of music as a healing medium. He will also tell you that it is just plain fun to play music, especially with others. Lou has a strong interest in string instruments used in many musical genres. To him, the phrase "no strings attached" is not necessarily a good thing. Lou's wife, Myla Wingard, is the violinist in the Chai Band.

Buddy Voit, Guitar
Buddy Voit, is a chief financial officer of a local health care company. He plays guitar for the CBI Friday Night Chai band and at Family Shabbat services. Buddy began playing Jewish music through songleading at various URJ camps and NFTY events since the late 60's.

Buddy has been a teacher at CBI and has organized the music for the High Holiday family services for the last five years. Recently, he was board president of the Kadima Independent Day School. Buddy is married to Diane Voit, a CBI board member and has three children, Marshall, Aaron, and Emma.

Myla Wingard, Violin

Violinist Myla Wingard is a Jewish educator and entertainer. She plays with the Beth Israel Friday Night Chai Band and accompanies Cantor Arlene Bernstein for various services at Beth Israel. Myla is on the weekend staff at the Brandeis Bardin Institute in Simi Valley where she has been working in various capacities for the past 30 years. Myla is married to Lou Rosen, bass guitarist with the Friday Night Chai Band and is the mother of Eitan and Adira.
