WHY I'M SUPPORTING THE BETH ISRAEL ENDOWMENT
By Merle Brodie
Twenty-three years ago, when my husband, Mitch and I decided to join the Temple
and get married here, we started not only our marriage, but also our relationship
with Congregation Beth Israel. Our continuous participation in Beth Israel, some
years more active than others, has been a great source of friendship, spiritual
enlightenment, celebration and comfort. From marriage, to baby namings, Chavurot,
day and religious school events, sisterhood, enrichment classes, Bat Mitzvah,
volunteering for the preschool and even through funerals, Beth Israel has become
the center of our family's Jewish community life. From day one, I have always
felt that this was "my Temple" just as it is yours!
Selfishly, I want my children and their children to have the same warmth and
comfort that I feel knowing I am a part of this special community. I want them
to know that no matter where they live, they always have a Temple home in Beth
Israel. I want to see our Congregation continue to flourish and represent reform
Jewish families in the San Diego region. I want Beth Israel to welcome young
families just as it did ours when we were starting out. I want it to be there
for our lifecycle events and maybe even my own Bat Mitzvah someday!
And, I want it to be there for all of us as we grow older and need to know there
are people like us, who care about us just because we are Jewish.
I've decided that the best way I can help assure that Congregation Beth Israel
continues to be a vital center for Jewish life for future generations is by making
an estate gift to the Congregation. By designating the Beth Israel Endowment
Fund in my will, I am leaving an everlasting legacy that represents my commitment
to the Temple. My hope is that down the road, when I am long gone, other people
will benefit from our foresight in creating a permanent fund from which only
the income can be spent. A gift to the endowment is truly a gift that keeps on
giving Dor l' Dor from generation
to generation.

Please consider what you can do through your own estate plan. You might be in
a position to give an outright gift to the endowment. Or, like me, you can leave
a bequest in your will or living trust. There are several different charitable
giving vehicles that are available to you. You might have an insurance policy
or an appreciated asset like real estate or stock that you can contribute and
receive tax benefits today.
With a gift to the Endowment Fund, you will join Mitch and me and the other members
of the Dor l' Dor Society in our shared commitment
to securing the future of Congregation Beth Israel and preserving our precious
Jewish heritage for generations to come.
Shalom,
Merle Brodie
