Nomi has taught at Beth Israel for nine years. She has lived in San Diego for
20 years. She attended Jewish Day School from kindergarten through 12th grade.
She spent a year in Israel Hebrew Institute. All her life she has taken continuous
Hebrew and Judaica education programs. She has a masters degree in Education
with an emphasis in Planning and Evaluation.
She belongs to the Association of Jewish Libraries and World Zionist Jewish Educators.

Youth Director, High School Coordinator Michelle
Berkowitz

Michelle
Leffler
Berkowitz serves as the Youth Director and High School Coordinator
for Beth Israel Religious School. She joined Congregation Beth Israel in August
2004. Her responsibilities include running and overseeing all youth programming, advising the 6th-8th grade NOAR group,
developing new and exciting programs for the youth of CBI, and working
with CBI High School. With a counseling background, she also supports the students socially, emotionally, and
academically.
Michelle earned her Master's in Educational Counseling at National University
in San Diego. Her B.A., from UCSD, is in Human Development with a minor in Theater. She also completed a College Counseling Certificate at UCSD in 2006.
Michelle grew up in Los Angeles, and, through 7th grade, attended Stephen S.
Wise Temple Elementary School, the Reform Jewish Day School of the largest Jewish
congregation in the world. She continued her Jewish education through her Bat
Mitzvah, Confirmation in 10th Grade, and was also an active member of USY, a
conservative youth group program, until she graduated from high school. Judaism
has always been an important part of her life.
Prior to starting as the counselor and Educational Program Coordinator at CBI,
Michelle has been a substitute teacher, teaching assistant and counselor intern
for grades K-12, at the Polinsky School. The Polinsky School is located on the
premises of the Polinsky Children's Center, a 24-hour emergency shelter for abused,
abandoned or neglected youth.
Michelle was married in April, 2004. She and her husband, Kevin, enjoy traveling,
dancing, going to the theater, reading, and spending time with family and friends. They also welcomed their first child, daughter Ella Jordyn, on December 14, 2007.

Rhona Gordon has worked at Beth Israel for 18 years. She has lived in San Diego
for 21 years. Rhona grew up in Cape Town, South Africa, where she attended afternoon
religious studies.
Rhona and her husband have one son and daughter-in-law, three daughters and three
sons-in-law, and eight grandchildren, all of whom live in San Diego.
