High School Curriculum
The High School (grades 8 12) meets on Tuesday evening from 5:45 to 8:00 pm. The evening is divided into three parts . From 5:45 to 6:15 p.m. students are served dinner in an informal setting conducive to mixing and conversation. Occasionally announcements and special programs take place during this time.
Between 6:15 and 8:00 p.m. students take two classes. There are core classes, required at each grade level, and elective classes. Some electives are offered to specific grade levels, some are available to all High School students, and some are limited by the number of slots available.
8th Grade Core Classes:
Anti-Semitism and the Holocaust: Historical examination of the events leading to the destruction of European Jewry. A visit to the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles.
Israel Today: Hot Topics Based on a syllabus created by the national Reform movement the class deals with the relevance of Israel to today’s Jewish youth. Current events are closely followed.
9th Grade Core Class:
Inter-Faith and Intra-Faith: An examination of different belief systems and their relationship to Judaism. What does it mean to be a Reform Jew in the Jewish community of today? Students also explore Jewish oppression in the U.S. today.
Leaders and Kings in Early Israel: Students will explore the history and legends of the early leaders of ancient Israel. Moral dilemmas and Family relations will be the focus of the program. Students study Fighters for Justice, Early Prophets in the Bible, Joshua, Judges and the Books of Samuel. Love, deceipt and intrigue fill these texts with interest. (taught by Helene Schlafman)

10th Grade Confirmation Core Class:
Living A Jewish Life Outside: Topics for discussion include: Why we are concerned about personal responsibility, brotherly love, liberation and action, protecting the weak, daring to protest, Reform Judaism and social justice. 11-12 Grade Seminar:
Topics will cover a range of subject areas from Pop Culture to Modern and Contemporary
Jewish Literature to Understanding where American culture and Jewish culture
meet and diverge. Other topics have included genocide, Why bad things happen to good people, etc.
CBI High Orientation – Elective Class Descriptions:
Welcome to CBI High! We have reorganized the elective choices and schedule this year. We will do our best to honor your 1st or 2nd choice requests. Each elective will last approximately 13 weeks. The only exception is Beginning Madrichim, which remains to be a full-year commitment. As we approach the 2nd semester, you will again have an opportunity to hear about and select your preferences for new elective classes.
Electives may include:
Elective #1 –HOT TOPICS
This class covers a variety of interesting and prevalent teen issues in a comfortable setting where teens can speak honestly about their beliefs, feelings, and can engage in active group discussions. Past topics have included Matisyahu, Domestic Violence, drugs, etc.
Elective # 2- CHILDREN’S HEBREW LITERATURE
Ahavtem likro Laila Tov Yareiach?? Did you love reading Good Night Moon, The Giving Tree, One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, when you were a kid? Learn Modern Hebrew through Children’s Literature. We will add to our Hebrew vocabulary by reading books you know. We will compare our books to their English counterparts and speak some Hebrew during class as well. It’s going to be fun!
Elective #3- DON’T BE A BYSTANDER
During the Holocaust, you were either a victim, a perpetrator, or a bystander. Today, many of us continue to be bystanders by choosing not to get involved in the world around us. This interactive class will explore the process of moving from "bystanding" to "involving".
Elective #4- Year-Long- BEGINNING MADRICHIM
Students will learn leadership skills, classroom/group management and communication skills, and will form an amazing social bond. Participating in our spring RS Camp as “counselors in training” is required, along with a commitment to teaching in RS Classes on Sunday mornings/Thursday afternoons in coming years.
