CONFIRMATION trip to washington, d.c.

On Thursday night, March 22, 15 teens and three chaperones boarded JetBlue headed for Washington D.C. Hours later, at 6:00 a.m. we arrived at our destination! After dropping off our bags at the hotel and having a quick breakfast, we hopped on the Metro and took a campus tour of George Washington University. This experience was an eye-opener for all the students, a preview of the college application process as they begin to consider their options.

The Religious Action Center hosts the program we participated in: the L'Taken Seminar, which brings together around 200 Confirmation-aged students over a long weekend to learn about the political process, how to lobby, and introduced them to a wide variety of social action issues. From homelessness in America to Immigration Rights, from Education Vouchers to LGBTA Rights, from Israel to Climate Change, our students awareness was greatly expanded.

The Confirmation Class participated in numerous programs. They did a mock lobby exercise, visited the Holocaust Museum & WWII Memorial, had dinner in Georgetown, participated in a beautiful Havdallah service at the Jefferson Memorial, strolled through the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum, and wrote lobby speeches on issues they cared deeply about. Our program concluded with a morning on the Hill, lobbying to our State Senators, Senator Boxer and Senator Feinstein, and in smaller groups, to our Representatives from our local San Diego districts.

This year's class truly bonded, re-established relationships, made new friends from other Reform Congregations across the US, and created memories that will certainly last a lifetime. Our students said this program changed their lives. Participating in the L'Taken program has now been cemented as an intrigal part of our Confirmation experience.
