Tenth Grade Confirmation

2011 confirmation class

Mazal tov to our 2011 Confirmation Class!

What is the Confirmation Class?

The members of the Confirmation class are young people in 10th grade who have chosen to continue in our school for the love of Jewish learning and/or because of their deep bond to their peers and to our synagogue community. confirmationThey are a special group whose ongoing involvement with study and synagogue life holds out the promise that they will be our core leaders in the future.

What Does the Class Learn?
These students learn about our heritage and traditions through the study of the Torah portions. The class also looks at issues of identity, sexual values, anti-Semitism, and mixed marriage and read sections of Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs, Ruth and Esther. They develop an understanding of Jewish ethics for today's world, explore Judaism in depth and strive to define their personal Jewish philosophy and theology.

What is the Confirmation Class Trip to Washington, D.C.?
The highlight of this program is a four-day trip to the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism in Washington, D.C. In preparation, the students study a variety of current topics including Jewish views on homosexuality, the global AIDS crisis, reproductive rights and the realities of sweatshop labor. During the trip they learn how to lobby and then meet with aides of our Federal legislators. It is an eye-opening and confidence-building experience.

What is the Confirmation Service?
The final event of the year is the Confirmation Service. Confirmands celebrate their commitment to Jewish life on Erev Shavuot. They lead the congregation in prayer through a service of their own creation. Members of the class chant the Ten Commandments and parts of the Scroll of Ruth as they are confirmed in their Jewish identity and their commitment to the Jewish community. Participation in the Confirmation comes with honor and recognition well deserved.
