The Joy of Challah: Create Edible Art with Our Torah Scribe, Julie Seltzer

Wednesday, February 22, 7:00 p.m.

Before becoming a Torah scribe, Julie Seltzer worked as a teacher at a Jewish day school and as a baker at the Isabella Freedman Jewish Retreat Center in Connecticut.  Each week she bakes a challah in a different shape, inspired by the Torah portion of the week. In this hands-on workshop, we, too, will make our own expressive food art based on the week’s Torah portion (or another portion of our choosing).  Taking an aspect of the text or one of the Torah portion’s themes, we will shape challah dough to create edible art that each participant will be able to take home.

Fee (for materials): Beth Israel Members $5; Nonmembers $10; Because we will be working with bread dough for the take home challah, only those who are registered and prepaid by Wednesday, February 15 can be accommodated. RSVP and pay online. For information contact Program Director Bonnie Graff, 858 535-1111, ext. 3800.

Second Annual Women's Seder

Monday, March 26, 6:00 p.m. (women only)

All women in the community are invited to attend our Seder, led by Rabbi/Cantor Arlene Bernstein and Rabbi Lenore Bohm. Bring your mother, daughters, sisters, nieces, aunts, and grandmothers, but don’t forget your BFF’s (best female friends). Our rabbis will help us reflect on freedom from a woman’s perspective. Special guests will again share their personal stories of freedom.

This special evening will be a time to come together with other women in the community to share in the time-honored rituals of the Passover holiday while perhaps creating some new ones as well.

A light meal will accompany the Seder. $20 for Beth Israel members; $30 for Non-members; $10 for Guests under 18. RSVP a must by Wednesday, March 21 online, or to Program Director Bonnie Graff at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Ongoing Women of Beth Israel Events

Volunteer at Rachel's Women's Center
2nd Sundays, 5:00 p.m.

Help the women at this temporary downtown shelter in two ways:

1. Prepare and serve dinner to 30 homeless women. It is easy, fun and very rewarding. Wait until you feel the hugs and enjoy the smiles of our supper guests.

2. Donate toiletries, unused cosmetics, underwear and socks for the women. Collection baskets are at all WBI events and in the Beth Israel lobby. Needed everyday for over 120-150 women: small size toiletries, sunscreen, chap stick/lip balm, hair brushes, toopaste, toothbrushes, travel water bottles, new socks and ladies underwear.

For more information contact Valerie Leman at wbirhouse@gmail.com, or 858 535-1111 ext. 3800.
