Ushering Guidelines
Thank you for volunteering to usher for this service. We greatly appreciate the
role you play in welcoming people to our synagogue and sanctuary. Some of you
have been doing this for years; others are here just for this one occasion. In
either case, we would like to clarify for you some of our procedures.
Greeting
You are the face of CBI, so please be welcoming. Smiles are great, especially
accompanied by "Good Evening/Morning/Afternoon," "Shabbat Shalom or "Good Shabbos."
Please be sure to dress appropriately, suit and tie are required for Erev Shabbat services in the Sanctuary unless otherwise notified.
For Distribution
Friday night: Our one-page service announcement sheet and, on the last Friday
night of the month and other special occasions, a service booklet. *No other
flyers should be distributed or put on the table outside the sanctuary. CBI announcements
may go on the Shalom table in the Social Hall; Lesley Mills must clear non-CBI
flyers during business hours.
Saturday Morning or Afternoon: Please distribute our CBI-printed Torah Service
pamphlets.
Kippot and Tallitot
There is a wooden rack/bin for kippot (yarmulkes) and tallitot to the left of
the entrances to the sanctuary. Kippot are not required (but encouraged) at all
services; tallitot are appropriate and encouraged for all on Shabbat Day; only
service leaders and those blessing the Torah are expected to wear them in the
evening.
Special Needs
Hearing assistance devices and large print copies of the gray Gates of Prayer
are available and stored in the cabinet.
Restrooms
Restrooms are at the other end of the vestibule, on the hallway opposite the
gift shop.
Schedule
In order to start our services on time, we ask your help in maintaining the following
schedule:
30 minutes before service start: Ushers should be in place ready to greet and
distribute materials.
10 minutes before: Please encourage people to make their way into the sanctuary.
5 minutes before: Please again encourage people to make their way into the
sanctuary.
2 minutes before: Please clear the center aisle so the Rabbis, Cantor, and
Bimah guests can process to the front.
After the service has begun, please close the doors in the back of the Sanctuary. At least one usher should remain in the foyer for another 10 to 15 minutes to greet latecomers.
Problems
If there are not enough seats, spills, lighting or facilities issues, please
contact a custodian or security guard. Each has a communication device to contact
others.
Again, we truly appreciate your part in welcoming our members and guests.
Thank you. go to top
