Adopt a US Soldier Project

The Social Action Committee is joining Reform congregations across the country in supporting our troops through the Adopt a US Soldier program. We need monetary donations in order to purchase and send drinks, food, books, games, health and hygiene products, boot socks and other items. These are things that our servicemen and women need but typically do not get while stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The more you donate, the more we can buy, and the more units we can serve. Committee member Joel Volsky will work with religious school students and CBI youth groups to pack the supplies in flat-rate boxes and send to members of our armed services registered through adoptaussoldier.org. Your donations will cover the cost of mailing as well.

Please make checks payable to CBI and staple a note indicating the check is for "Social Action Committee/Adopt a Soldier project." Mail to: CBI, 9001 Towne Centre Drive, San Diego, 92122, Attention Bonnie Graff.

For more information contact Joel Volsky at or Program Director Bonnie Graff at (858) 535-1111 ext. 3800 or email her at .

Additional Opportunities:
Grocery/gas gift cards are needed for the young adults who are 18 and have just aged-out of the system. Pro-bono or discounted medical, dental and psychotherapy services are needed for young adults, age 21 or older, who no longer have medical insurance.

Knit and Nosh
Knit and Nosh is a multi-generational charitable needlework group for those who love to knit, crochet, quilt or cross-stitch for a good cause. We create piecework blankets from knitted and crocheted squares and donate them to Vista Hill ParentCare in La Mesa. ParentCare offers a variety of services to help at-risk families break the cycle of substance abuse, child abuse, neglect and domestic violence.

If you don't yet knit or crochet, join us to learn. If you already know how, perform the mitzvah of teaching another. Donations of extra yarn, knitting needles and crochet hooks are welcome. A Knit and Nosh donation container is located in the lobby. Patterns, instructions and nosh provided. Knit and Nosh meetings are held one Sunday each month at 10 a.m. in the David & Dorothea Garfield Social Hall from September through June. Watch the web site for future dates. Questions? Contact . Save the Environment: Get your Social Action Grocery Tote Bag

The CBI Tikkun Olam/Social Action Committee is selling grocery tote bags to enable us to increase our mitzvah programming to benefit non-profit agencies in San Diego. Please see the receptionist in the CBI office to purchase your tote bag. Suggested Donation: $10.

Take Action to Stop Genocide in Darfur
Government-sponsored militias in Darfur are killing, raping, and torturing tens of thousands of innocent men, women and children. The militias burn villages and have chased over 1.6 million people into the desert. Most now live in camps without enough water, food, medical care, shelter, sanitation or safety.

Here's what you can do to help:
  • Wear a "Not On Our Watch" green bracelet to raise awareness. Give some to friends.
  • Write to government leaders, including President Bush, your senators, congressperson, and the United Nations.
  • Write to your newspaper. Ask for more coverage about Darfur.
  • Ask religious and community leaders to speak about the crisis.
  • Skip a meal and donate the money you save to a humanitarian relief agency, such as American Jewish World Service. Encourage others to do the same.
For more information visit www.SaveDarfur.org or contact , or , CBI Program Director, at 858-535-1111 ext. 3800. The Hunger Project

The Hunger Project prepares and serves brunch on Sunday mornings at the Paul Mirable Center, part of St. Vincent de Paul Village, which provides services for homeless people and clients from the surrounding neighborhood.
