  • Gave away several hundred CFL light bulbs at our evening Shabbat service on Friday, December 19

  • Social Action Committee members greeted our guests from First United Methodist Church as more than 400 worshippers attended the Interfaith Thanksgiving Service on Nov. 26.
  • Run for the Hungry 5/10k on Nov. 27.
  • Food Collection for Mama's Kitchen co-sponsered by Social Action Committee and First United Methodist Church

  • Book drive collected over 60 boxes of books, games, and toys for the Sudanese Refugee Network.

  • Mitzvah Day for sorting and packing the Spring Collectibles with the 6th grade Religious School students and stuffed boxes for the Adopt a US Soldier.
  • Adopt a US Soldier where 5th grade students packed and mailed 42 gift cartons to soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan.

April 2008

  • Spring Collectibles project benefiting Sudanese and Burmese Refugees
  • Author Paul Barrett discussed his book “American Islam: The Struggle for the Soul of a Religion” and autographed copies.
  • Inaugurated CBI’s Nothing But Nets Project, under the auspices of a new CBI philanthropic Social Action networking group called “Make It Happen!” (over 547 nets to date)
  • Inaugurated Habitat for Humanity “Penny Lane” project, to collect 20 million pennies to build one home, captained by two B’not Mitzvah Morgan Couch and Kendal Blank. (over $5000 to date)

March 2008

  • Second annual environmental event “Out of Gas, or All Charged Up?” included the film “Who Killed the Electric Car?,” with panelists Assemblywoman Lori Saldaña, Gregory Newhouse, David Schumacher, Irene M. Stillings, and the Electric Vehicle Association of San Diego car show.
  • Inaugurated Knit and Nosh get-togethers at Café Beth Israel on the second Sunday of the month during Religious School calendar year
  • “Bring a Box to Blot Out Hunger” Purim event donated lots of shakable, boxed food items to the JFS Hand Up Food Pantry.
  • Inaugurated the CBI “Adopt a US Soldier” Project providing needed items to our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

February 2008

  • AniMeals collection of pet food and supplies for companion animals of elderly and homebound individuals.

January 2008

  • CBI members attended the Martin Luther King Jr. “All Peoples’ Breakfast” event.

  • CBI’s Habitat for Humanity crew home building events
  • Knit and Nosh program knits/crochets blankets for children for Vista Hill
