Yom Hashoah Fund Raising

The Men’s Club distributed Yom Hashoah candles to Temple members this year. The monies received from subsequent donations to the Men’s Club help support Holocaust related projects:

  • The Kriah Holocaust Memorial Sculpture
  • The sponsorship of one of our CBI Youths (nominated by Cantor Bernstein) for a trip to Israel
  • Purchase books, tapes, and DVDs (in consultation with the CBI librarian) of relevance to the history of the Jewish people, especially vis-à-vis the Holocaust
  • Sponsor trips for Sunday School youth to attend the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles

This year the Men’s Club Board will meet on Wednesday, May 7 in the courtyard to commemorate Yom Ha Shoah.

Men's Club Donates B'nai Mitzvah Prayer Books

The Men's Club donates the prayer books that are given to each B'nai Mitzvah at CBI. The book is a loving gift that includes many prayers and passages that are useful throughout life. Donations are made possible by the Club's dues paying members. The Men's Club large membership helps make possible the many donations made during the year. All members are invited to our board meetings. If you have not joined the Men's Club, please call David Dahlfor a membership application at 858-565-2801.

Café Beth Israel Opens

This new venue is for the benefit of Religious School parents. Sponsored by the Mens Club and WBI it will be open on Sundays 9:00 to 11:30 am. The social hall is set up with tables, a 35-inch TV, where parents can nosh on bagels and sweets and drink coffee or decaf. The Men’s Club is providing bagels, cream cheese, the San Diego Union-Tribune LA Times, and NY Times newspapers. The CBI Library will provide books for browsing.

Parents can bring their laptop and connect to the new Wi-Fi service.

Men's Club Ushers

The pleasant, friendly ushers who pass out your prayer books and literature at Friday Shabat Services are coordinated by the Men's Club and WBI. Thank you to our April ushers: Michael Rosenblatt, David Schlafman, Benjamin Schneider, Ben Weinbaum.

MEN'S CLUB EVENTS

Men's Discussion Group
Every 2nd and 4th Wed. at 10:00 a.m.

  • CBI Rotunda Conference Room

The purpose of the Men's Discussion Group is to create a forum for men who are members of Congregation Beth Israel to meet together, enjoy camaraderie and to discuss relevant issues. Participation is not limited to CBI members and a reservation is not required. Just show up.

Discussion topics depend on what participants wish to discuss, and can include:

  • Current Events
  • Politics
  • Local, State, and Federal issues
  • Financial Matters
  • Religion
  • Health & Social Issues
  • or any topic of mutual interest

From time to time, outside "subject" experts could be asked to participate, to lend their expertise.

Rabbi Bill Berk speak at Special Erev Shabbat Service on May 9

Our speaker for the May 9th Erev Shabbat service will be Rabbi Bill Berk. This service is part of the Israel at 60 celebration.

Rabbi William C. Berk is a graduate of the Hebrew Union College. At the Hebrew Union College, Rabbi Berk won awards in Homiletics and for social action work. He is a graduate of the University of California in Berkeley and holds a lifetime teaching credential from the state of California, where he taught public school for three years. Rabbi Berk served as Rabbi of Temple Chai in Phoenix, Arizona for 19 years. He is a past President of the Board of Rabbis of Greater Phoenix, and the Paradise Valley Ministerial Association. He was on the founding committee of the Jess Schwartz Jewish Community High School.

Rabbi Berk is currently a Rabbinic Fellow at the Shalom Hartman Institute's Center for Rabbinic Enrichment. He recently was asked to serve on the advisor board for Bayit Chadash, Israel's blossoming new movement for developing Israeli spiritual life. Rabbi Berk was instrumental in the founding of Temple Chai's Shalom Center for Healing, and has been active in the movement for synagogue involvement for Jews with Special Needs.

Texas Hold-em Tournament
Sun., May 18 at 3:00 p.m.

Low buy-in. Snacks, prizes and refreshments included in afternoon festivities. Last year, over 50 players all had a great time. Come for an afternoon of fun and good times and while watching Dr. Stacey Coleman defend her 2-year title. Beginners welcome. Adults only please, Ladies welcome.

May Dinner Forum –The Peres Center for Peace
Wed., May 21 at 6:30 p.m.

  • Feuerstein Family Activity Center
  • $10 for CBI members; $12.50 for nonmembers
  • Dinner includes deli

The Mission of the Peres Center for Peace is to build an infrastructure of peace and reconciliation by and for the people of the Middle East.

Marvin Spira is a thirty year veteran of the food industry. He has worked with the Shimon Peres Center for Peace on agricultural programs to enhance crop yields and develop new strains of typical Middle Eastern crops. The programs he has been involved in has included representatives from Egypt, Morocco, Israel, Jordan and the Palestinian Authority. He will be speaking on the Peres Center for Peace.

Men's Golf Tournament with the Rabbis

  • June 1
  • Play begins at 10:30 a.m.
  • Fee: $92.50 per person

The First Annual Men's Club golf tournament will be held June 1 at Riverwalk Golf Course, located off of Fashion Valley Road in Hotel Circle. The format of the tournament will ensure that everyone will have an enjoyable experience. Lunch, golf carts and prizes will be provided for the nominal cost of $92.50 per person.  Play will begin at 10:30 AM.

The first and second foursomes will include Rabbis Berk and Ettman.  The opportunity to golf with the Rabbis will be available to those wishing to bid at the silent auction that will be conducted in the next few months. Watch for details.

This will be a fun filled event for all men and women who are members of CBI and their guests. Plan now on joining Rabbis Berk and Ettman on this fun-filled occasion.

First Wednesday of the Month

Join members for a lively discussion of Men's Club and CBI activities at Board meetings the first Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. We follow with dinner at a nearby restaurant. Current and prospective members are welcome. Contact for information.
