About the Men's Club

The Men's Club offers adult men of all ages a Jewish setting in which to learn and socialize while supporting our congregation.

How to Join the Men's Club
New CBI membership includes one year free Men's Club membership for adult men. Afterward CBI members determine their own dues level, either either $36, $54, $72, or $100. These dues make possible our programming and support services to CBI. Please make your checks payable to "Beth Israel Men's Club" and mail to:

The Men’s Club is celebrating Beth Israel's 150th anniversary with a new Dinner Forum format that features our own notable and accomplished Beth Israel members as speakers. Forum 150 will take place on the third Wednesday of each month and will include a deli dinner.

Purim Carnival Blood Drive - Rain or Shine!

Donate and Receive a Free Deli Dinner
Sunday, March 11, 9:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

The Men's Club is again sponsoring its Purim Carnival Blood Drive with the San Diego Blood Bank. For your donation, you will receive a free deli dinner from the Men's Club at our next dinner forum, plus a T-shirt from the Blood Bank. Enjoy the carnival and take a few minutes to do a mitzvah.

To see the requirements for donating blood, visit the San Diego Blood Bank website. Although blood donations will be accepted from qualified donors at the Carnival, we ask that you make an appointment so we can meet our promised sign up totals with the Blood Bank.

Some Facts About Blood Donation:

  • 60% of the population is eligible to give…only 3% do.
  • Sign up for the Blood Drive-We receive Family Blood Plan coverage from the SD Blood Bank by hosting regular blood drives and having our employees donate.
  • 3 donors are signed-up so far. We need a minimum of 36 donors, to collect 30 pints for our Blood drive.
  • Did you know blood expires every 42 days?
  • 1 car accident victim could use 50 pints upon arriving at the emergency room- we are only trying to collect 30 pints.
Please eat a good meal and drink plenty of fluids before donating blood. All donors must show proof of identification. Please pass this information on to a friend if you have given blood in the last eight weeks (16 weeks for double red cell donations). For information and to RSVP, call 858-535-1111, ext. 3800.
 
Yom HaShoah Candle Packing

Sunday, March 18, 8:00 a.m.

The Men’s Club distributes Yom Hashoah candles to Beth Israel members each year. We will be packing and addressing 1400 candles for mailing until early afternoon in the social hall. All volunteer help for this wonderful mitzvah is welcome. This simple gesture from the Men’s Club reminds us all to remember the Shoah.

Media Entrepreneurship Reflections on the Recent Past and Fturure Journalism, Media and Communications

Michael Flaster

Michael Flaster is President of Traveling Mind Productions, a media production and consulting firm he established in 2000. His clients have included Marketplace Productions in Los Angeles, The United States Department of State and Minnesota Public Radio. Prior to his affiliation with Traveling Mind Productions, Mr. Flaster was Associate General Manager for KPBS, San Diego. He also served as a part-time faculty member in the Communications Department at San Diego State University, teaching courses in Telecommunications Management and Programming. Michael will provide his observations and comments on the last three decades and the future of journalism, media and communications practice and study. He will also look at the San Diego media landscape and discuss trends and impacts.

Ernest Rady
My Career and Your Questions

April 18, 6:30 p.m.

Ernest RadyErnest and his wife Evelyn are Beth Israel Life Members of 45 years. The Rady Family is philanthropically involved in many aspects of the San Diego Community including UCSD’s Rady School of Management and the Rady Children’s Hospital. Mr. Rady was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, attended the University of Manitoba and earned degrees in law (Law Society Award for Academic Achievement) and commerce (University Gold Medal). He moved to San Diego with his family in 1966, and founded American Assets, Inc., a privately held conglomerate that acquires, improves and develops commercial real estate assets. Ernest will talk about his remarkable career and respond to your questions.

Laurie Black

May 16, 6:30 p.m.

The Men’s Club will celebrate Beth Israel's 150th anniversary with a new Dinner Forum format that features our own notable and accomplished Beth Israel members as speakers. Forum 150 will take place on the third Wednesday of each month and will include a deli dinner.

Laurie BlackLaurie Black has been involved in the San Diego community for more than twenty years. She currently holds the position of Principal for LJ Black Consulting Group, a firm that handles strategy, visioning and public relations for local clients. Ms. Black was previously president of the Downtown San Diego Partnership and chief of staff to Congresswoman Lynn Schenk, but most recently served as a commissioner for the San Diego Port District. Well known for her advocacy on mental illness, Laurie has been recognized for her contributions to the community by the Salvation Army, the Downtown San Diego Partnership, Athena/UCSD Connect, and the YWCA. San Diego Magazine also cited her as one of "50 People to Watch" and has received a leadership visionary award, Quality of Living, from LEAD for her dedication to the community. Laurie Black received her BA from San Diego State University in Political Science with a minor in Women's Studies.

The pleasant, friendly ushers who pass out your prayer books and literature at Friday Shabat Services are coordinated by the Men's Club and WBI. To volunteer to usher, please contact Don Greenberg.


Men's Discussion Group
Every 2nd and 4th Monday at 10:00 a.m.
Feuerstein Family Activity Center
The purpose of the Men's Discussion Group is to create a forum for men who are members of Congregation Beth Israel to meet together, enjoy camaraderie and to discuss relevant issues. Participation is not limited to Men's Club members and a reservation is not required. Just show up. Discussion topics depend on what participants wish to discuss, and can include: current events, politics, local, state, and federal issues, financial matters, religion, health and social Issues, or any topic of mutual interest. From time to time, outside "subject" experts could be asked to participate, to lend their expertise.

Sundays, during Religious School

No need to stop at Starbucks on Sunday morning. Visit Cafe Beth Israel for a complimentary cup of richly blended coffee, tasty bagels and cream cheese, and other treats. Relax, surf the Internet, read a newspaper, watch the news or sports on TV and schmooze with friends. Open Sundays during Religious School from 9:00 - 11:30 a.m. in the Social Hall. Men's Club Provides Gifts to Bar/Bat Mitzvah
The Men's Club proudly continues its long tradition of presenting Bar and Bat Mitzvah celebrants with a meaningful religious remembrance in the form of a book to commemorate their entry into the Jewish community.


Monthly Board Meeting: First Wednesday of the Month
We are inviting interested CBI members to join our Board. We meet for lively discussions of Men's Club and CBI activities on the 1st Wednesday evening of each month at 6:30 p.m. We follow with dinner at a nearby restaurant. Qualifications to be involved are simply your willingness to help and guide the organization through your ideas and participation. Enjoyment and fellowship are guaranteed. Most Saturdays Congregation Beth Israel holds Shabbat services in the mornings at 10:00 a.m. and afternoons at 4:00 p.m. in our beautiful Glickman-Galinson sanctuary.
