Anat Hoffman: Social Justice and Civil Rights For All Israelis

Thursday Feburary 2, at 6:30 p.m.
Held at Congregation Beth El

Why are women being forced to sit on the back of the bus in Jerusalem? Who in Israel decides who is a Jew? How is the Israeli government responding to religiously sanctioned gender discrimination that has spread to the Army and much of public life? The Israel Religious Action Center is the preeminent civil and human rights organization in Israel focusing on the issues of religion and state. IRAC has been fighting to advance pluralism and defend the freedoms of conscience, faith, and religion in Israeli society since 1987. Anat Hoffman, executive director of IRAC, is coming to California to discuss the threat to women’s rights in Israel at a time when the religious climate there has taken a turn toward the extreme. Anat is a major leader for social justice in Israel and is Chairwoman of Women of the Wall.
Some of her current efforts include:

  • Fighting against illegal segregation of women in public places
  • Gaining recognition for Reform and Conservative marriages and conversions
  • Achieving the right for women to wear a prayer shawl and pray and read from the Torah out loud and collectively at the Western Wall in Jerusalem

The Anti Defamation League of San Diego and Cygnet Theatre present "Parade"

March 25, 2012

A true story. A love story. A musical. The true story of the 1913 trial of Jewish factory manager, Leo Frank, accused of the murder of a thirteen-year-old employee, Mary Phagan, in Atlanta, Georgia, and his assimilated Southern wife who finds the strength and love to become his greatest champion. The play is both hauntingly beautiful and bitingly frank in its depiction of love in the midst of adversity and growing racial tensions.

Join us for a private dessert reception and an exclusive event featuring Steve Oney, author of “And the Dead Shall Rise”, the book based on the Leo Frank story.

Tickets: $50    To purchase, please register at http://www.adl.org/adlparade

Jewish BIG Pals: A Unique Relationship

JFS’s Jewish BIGPals connects young Jewish adult mentors with Jewish children from single parent families.

Learn How You Can Be A Jewish BIGPal!

Mentors are people just like me and you. But their commitment to make a difference makes them everyday heroes - transforming lives, and transforming our community. You can be a hero too. Just a few hours a couple of times a month can make a big difference in a child's life. All interested volunteers age 19 and up are invited to apply.

Learn how a Jewish Big Pal can Enhance Your Child’s Life

Jewish BIGPals can be safe, trusting companions to mentor children from single-parent or non-traditional families, supporting them in facing life transitions and developing positive self-images. Mentors provide friendship, companionship, and life-enriching experiences, enhancing children’s growth and development and helping them achieve their full potential. Matching your child with a Jewish BIGPal will help him/her form a lasting, supportive relationship on the journey to adulthood.
