Rave Reviews for Danny Maseng, Artist in Residence

The legendary composer, singer and performer Danny Maseng provided CBI with a weekend of prayer, music and inspiration. Friday evening 460 gathered to worship and sing in a Shabbat service that was a spiritually transcendent experience. The beautiful voices of Danny, Cantor Bernstein and the outstanding CBI choir and the Chai Band, filled the Sanctuary. Saturday night our chavurot were honored as 350 guests were treated to a two hour havdallah and concert. The concert featured Danny, Cantor, the choir and band and the talented Heidi Gantwerk. The evening was highlighted with Yiddish, Israeli, Ladino, and popular American songs. Danny's extraordinary vocal prowess thrilled the audience which burst into two rousing standing ovations. Installation of Rabbi Ettman & Selichot Eve Observance
Rabbi Ettman with his parents
Rabbi Glenn Ettman with his parents Marilyn and Philip Ettman
On Saturday, September 16, the congregation formally welcomed Rabbi Ettman to our community in an evening of joy, hope and renewal. Rabbi Ettman's official installation (Read Rabbi Ettman's Installation Remarks) began with a Selichot study session with special guest speaker Rabbi Richard Levy, friend and mentor to Rabbi Ettman.

    Rabbi Richard Levy
Dr. Richard Levy
Rabbi Levy is the Director of the School of Rabbinic Studies at Hebrew Union College- Jewish Institute of Religion in Los Angeles. He has served as Executive Director of the Los Angeles Hillel Council and President of the Central Conference of American Rabbis and was the architect of the Statement of Principles for Reform Judaism passed in 1999.

Betty Byrnes, Dora Tuchin, and Stuart Simmons
Dora Tuchin (center), one of our eldest congregants at age 95, attended Rabbi Glenn Ettman's installation. She is photographed here with Betty Byrnes, past president of CBI, and Executive Director Stuart Simmons.
After the study session, Women of Beth Israel and Men's Club hosted a delicious dessert reception. The evening concluded with a Selichot service. Selichot means "forgiveness," the principal theme of the High Holy Days. The Selichot service introduced the wonderful music and melodies of the High Holy Days and was an exceptional warm-up for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

Cabaret Night: A Truly Memorable Evening With Cantor Arlene Bernstein and Friends; View the Cabaret Night in Photos

Cantor Arlene Bernstein, Cantor Sheldon Merel, Andy Mayer, Heidi Gantwerk and Cantor Jonathan Grant were Cabaret Night performers at Congregation Beth Israel.

Patrons and guests were treated to a spectacular evening of music and fun as Cantor Bernstein and friends presented Cabaret Night, and All That Jazz. Singers Heidi Gantwerk, Cantor Sheldon Merel, Cantor Jonathan Grant, pianist Andy Mayer, the Chai Band and a professional jazz ensemble joined Cantor Bernstein to present selections that ranged from Broadway to pop to jazz.

The Women of Beth Israel would like to thank the performers and the many volunteers who made this event possible. A special thank you goes to our wonderfully talented, and a little bit funny Cantor Arlene Bernstein. She selected the musicians, the music, and the magic. For one evening, life really was a Cabaret! Thank you for coming to the Cabaret.
CBI Commemorated the 25th Anniversary of
The State Of Israel, With Clive David, Producer

Clive David met with Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meier, during which she told of a celebration in the Negev when Israelis and Palestinians feasted, sang and danced together. Mrs. Meir exclaimed, "if it can be so good, why must it be so bad?"
Congregation Beth Israel and Temple Emanu-El proudly presented a special program of reminiscence, commemorating the 25th anniversary of the State of Israel. Thirty-two years ago, in August of 1973, a wonderful celebration, called Salute To Israel, took place in the presence of then Prime Minister Golda Meir.

Clive David, a Beth Israel member who now resides in San Diego, produced the event. Mr. David shared his personal account on Sat. Oct. 22 with a video of the special seen on ABC later that year.

Clive David has been referred to by Los Angeles Magazine as a "legendary party architect." Reuters News Agency called him the "world's best man at giving parties." During his career, he has created galas for notables including President John F. Kennedy, Queen Elizabeth II and this memorable celebration honoring Golda Meir. This celebration was held in Jerusalem and Caesarea over three days.

David Ben Gurion, one of the founders of Zionism, met with Clive David
The broadcast brought an uplifting spirit to Jews and non-Jews alike. The Master of Ceremonies was Alan King and the program featured appearances by Isaac Stern, Pablo Casals, Robert Merrill, Patrice Munsel, Rudolph Nureyev and the Royal Ballet and many others.

Since its independence in 1948, Israel has held a place on center stage in world news. At age 57 today, the headlines are filled with a mixture of anxiety and hope as the evacuation of Gaza raises new questions about Israel and co-existence with her neighbors.

Mr. David tells us that Prime Minister Golda Meir related many "pearls of wisdom" during their first meeting. One story told of a celebration in the Negev two nights beforehand when Israelis and Palestinians feasted, sang and danced together – an unheard-of happening. Mrs. Meir exclaimed, "if it can be so good, why must it be so bad?"
