UJF Community Holocaust Commemoration
Sunday, April 11 at 1:30 p.m. at the JCC

CBI members are warmly invited to attend the Annual Community Holocaust Commemoration which will take place in the David and Dorothea Garfield Theater of the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center, 4126 Executive Drive, La Jolla.

This is the largest Yom HaShoah program in the United States. Last year more than 650 people packed the theatre at the JCC, and the overflow watched the program on a big screen in the library. The event is covered by local media and attended by members of the U.S. Congress.

The theme of our program this year is Remember, Honor, and Teach: Liberation 65 Years Later. The guest speaker will be Stephen Smith, Executive Director of Steven Spielberg's Shoah Foundation in Los Angeles. The Shoah Foundation interviews Holocaust survivors and witnesses of the Holocaust (military liberators and others). The current collection, comprised of 52,000 interviews, is permanently housed at USC. Mr. Smith’s talk will be followed by a 10-15 minute film containing interviews with three local survivors and camp liberators. The film will include footage from the Shoah Foundation, as well as footage from the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington. We will recognize and honor WWII veterans, Jewish and non-Jewish, with a military color guard and in our candle lighting ceremony. The entire program will last approximately 90 minutes.
