A Musical Night in Jerusalem
Celebrating 10 Years with Cantor Arlene Bernstein
An overflow crowd of 600 CBI members and friends turned out to honor Cantor Arlene Bernstein at A Musical Night in Jerusalem on Saturday, May 17. View photos from the event.
With the Price Family Courtyard transformed into a Jerusalem marketplace, well-wishers enjoyed an outdoor wine reception and dinner. Moving into the Glickman-Galinson Sanctuary, decorated with a Jerusalem set, attendees celebrated Havdalah led by Cantor Emeritus Sheldon Merel and were treated to a moving musical tribute.
The Youth and Teen Choir, Adult Choir and Chai Band joined in song with special guest Danny Maseng making his much anticipated return engagement. A highlight was the premier performance of Anim Z’mirot, composed as a gift for Cantor Bernstein by Chai Band member Andy Mayer. Special guest pianist Joyce Rosenzweig accompanied Cantor Bernstein on her solos. Rabbi Michael Berk welcomed Rabbi Jonathan Stein back to CBI to pay tribute to Cantor. Rabbi Berk and Emily Jennewein, chair of the event, delivered loving tributes. CBI member and news anchor, Marty Levin served as emcee. A dessert reception and dancing to the Sabras Band capped off the evening.

Congregants and friends applied their expertise in large and small ways to make A Musical Night in Jerusalem the evening that it was. We want to take this opportunity to thank one and all.
Barbara Lubin and Silvana Christy established the look and feel of the evening with the Jerusalem decor. Not a detail was left for chance under the keen eye of Program Director Bonnie Graff. Louis Vener designed and built the Jerusalem sky-scape set for the Glickman-Galinson Sanctuary. Painters included Perla Myers and CBI’s Facilities Maintenance Director Nick Reilly. Nick and Facilities Coordinator Elaine Guerrero also supervised an expanded team to set party spaces with lightening speed. Barbara Goldman, Joanne Gimbel and Ruthe Rogow masterminded the repast enjoyed during the dinner and dessert reception. Barbara Haworth obtained special wines for the evening with the help of Jack Berkman. Sandy Feldman and Heidi Gantwerk engaged Danny Maseng and the Sabras Band to perform and developed the exciting musical program. Cantor Emeritus Sheldon Merel led Havdalah. Songleaders Buddy Voit and Jeremy Gimbel led the Youth Choir and set the tone for the evening as guests entered the sanctuary. Andy Mayer composed a song dedicated to Cantor and performed for the first time at the event. Andy, Heidi and Buddy also helped Cantor rehearse the Youth Choir in preparation for the event. David and Christine Chait created choreography for the Youth Choir. The Chai Band and Adult Choir performed beautifully. Joyce Rosenzweig, artist-in-residence at Hebrew Union College in New York, flew in to accompany Cantor. Marty Levin emceed the event. Rabbi Michael Berk welcomed Rabbi Jonathan Stein back to CBI to pay tribute to Cantor. Rabbi Berk and Emily Jennewein, chair of the Committee to Honor Cantor Bernstein, delivered loving tributes. Leslie Simon and Scribbles Ink designed the invitation. Cindy Polger and Kristen Victor solicited hundreds of tributes in honor of Cantor and provided design guidance and expertise. Their team of callers included Pat Spira, Ron Fox, Judy Lyon and Gail Levin. Executive Assistant Heather Taylor-Williams created the gorgeous Tribute Book. Debbie Skomer recruited photo submissions for the video montage that was created by Ken Gimbel. Judi Schwartz wrote the text slides and Mary Ann Scher and Barbara Goldman ensured that the montage included as many congregants as possible. Gail Levin chaired publicity and with Beverly Miller contacted media throughout San Diego to cover the event. Karen Shein Christiansen, Vicki Raun and Emily Jennewein wrote articles for Tidings about congregants inspired by Cantor over the years. Karen also created the beautiful program booklet. Gary Hirschfeld designed a master database to track all event activity, including an assigned seating system. Member and Donor Services Coordinator Lianne Gordon put Gary's plan through its paces, producing seating plans that streamlined the reservation system. Executive Director Lesley Mills developed the essential fundraising and development infrastructure for the event. With strategic advice from Ann Campbell, President Amy Corton spearheaded fundraising efforts for the event, soliciting a capstone gift that allowed ticket prices to be accessable to all. Jerry Sampson assembled a welcoming group of congregants to serve as greeters and ushers. Barbara Lounsbury established a childcare program for the evening, working with Early Childhood Education Director Tammy Vener to plan a fun pajama party. Iris and Matt Strauss will host a fabulous party to thank the event’s underwriters. Much important, behind-the-scenes work was conducted by Janine Feldman, Audrey Levine, Cynthia Fram, Tamara Alter, Terri Sapp, Beverly Sildorf, Susan Feldman and many others. Event Chair Emily Jennewein, Executive Director Lesley Mills and Program Director Bonnie Graff masterfully organized and coordinated all these efforts and enjoyed every minute of it!
