Members Who Give Are Dor l' Dor Society Members
In every community outside of Israel where Jews have lived, the one institution that has had the clearest impact on the people and on future generations is the synagogue. At CBI, we are inheritors of a past that has been carefully and lovingly built, nurtured and preserved by those who came before us. Now increasingly, it is our turn to help secure the future.

Congregants usually think the money they contribute annually and pay in fees covers all of our expenses. But this is not so. We are however, blessed with a growing endowment fund and the interest it earns contributes substantially to help pay for today’s costs. This fund is made up of dollars contributed by congregants – some who have passed away – who understood that the costs of educating children, helping those in need, attracting talented staff and yes, even paying the utility bills will take even more money tomorrow than it does today.

To respond to this challenge, we have formed the Dor l' Dor Society to honor those who have either made an outright endowment gift to the Congregation, become Life Members or have told us they have included the synagogue in their estate plan. These gifts are helping to build our Endowment Fund and ensure that our synagogue will remain a cornerstone of Jewish life in San Diego. Not all can give in all ways but there may be a right way for you. Your outright or current endowment gift will be carefully invested and we will only spend the income it earns. You may consider making a gift of appreciated stock or naming CBI as a life insurance beneficiary. You may want to become our next Life Members or you may want to leave a bequest in your will, an act that involves little sacrifice in the present.

Since we established this program, a growing number of CBI members have told us they have made a provision in their estate plan to leave a gift to the congregation. They have shared their personal stories, which have been featured in Tidings . We are pleased to continue sharing what they have said and now you can read their stories here. They are part of a group of more of more than 30 congregational families who have said, "yes, count us in!"

We may not know the exact formula to guarantee that today’s important institutions will be able to respond fully to the ever-increasing complexities of Jewish identity in the future. We do however know that we can do something today for the future of Congregation Beth Israel.

Our Endowment Fund is meant to be a lasting legacy and as it grows it will sustain CBI. Together, let’s follow in our predecessors’ footsteps, keeping our synagogue vibrant for our children and grandchildren.

Please add your name to this growing group and help us plant for generations to come. For more information, please contact Lesley Mills, Acting Executive Director, at 858-535-1111, ext. 3133.
