Has Your IRA Grown Beyond Your Needs?
If you're over 70.5 years old, the Pension Protection Act of 2006 (PPA) permits the rollover of up to $100,000 per year from an IRA directly to a qualifying charity without recognizing the transer as income. The transfer counts toward the minumun annual distribution requirement. This could be a wonderful opportunity to pre-pay a multi-year commitment or annual gift to the Beth Israel Fund, or to make a gift to our endowment fund.
Remember, no gift is too small. As long as total distributions are capped at the $100,000 per year threshold, your gift can be as little as $500, or $1000, or $10,000.
The Pension Protection Act opportunity lasts only through December 31, 2007. For more information, call Executive Director Lesley Mills at 858-535-1111. You may also call Gail Littman at the Jewish Community Foundation at 858-279-2740. Of course, we encourage you to seek the advice of your professional advisor before you make a charitable IRA rollover gift.
Thank you for your ongoing support of Congregation Beth Israel.

About Tzedakah
Tzedakah is the Hebrew word for the acts we call in English charity. However,
the nature of tzedakah is different from the idea of charity. "Charity" suggests
benevolence and generosity, a magnanimous act by the wealthy for the benefit
of the poor and needy.
While this is important and good, the truer meaning of the word tzedakah is righteousness, justice or fairness. In Judaism, giving to help others is not only viewed as generous or magnanimous, rather we see it as the performance of a duty.
Performing tzedakah can be fulfilled in many ways. By giving money to the poor, to health care institutions, special causes, educational institutions and yes, to synagogues.
We invite you to learn about the many ways you can perform tzedakah at CBI and we welcome your generous support.
