Five CBI families signed the
San Diego Jewish Community Foundation's Book of Life at a ceremony
on Sun., Oct. 29. This new group joins the many CBI families who
have signed the Book of Life in recent years.
The Book of Life is a project of the Jewish Community Foundation of San Diego.
Individuals and families are eligible to sign the Book of Life by promising
to establish a current endowment to one or more Jewish organizations or synagogues
or leave a bequest of any amount to the Jewish community.
The Book of Life is a community archive that is on display at the Jewish
Community Foundation. It is designed to be a guardian
of the heritage of the entire Jewish community.
Betty Byrnes, a past president of CBI, is the Chair of the Book of Life program.
Joining her at the signing ceremony at Temple Solel were Marjory Kaplan Chief
Executive Officer of the Jewish Community Foundation, and United Jewish Federation
of San Diego County Executive Vice President Michael Rassler, both of whom
are CBI members. Lesley Mills, CBI's Development Director, also attended.
The Book of Life knows no bounds of age, wealth or affiliation. There
is no minimum contribution. In the spirit of an ethical will, this is a personal,
not a legal commitment. Signing the Book
of Life gives participants the chance to write a statement of up to 300 words
that expresses why they are leaving a legacy to the Jewish community.
A list
of those who have signed the Book of Life is available on the Jewish
Community Foundation's Web site.
For information about establishing a current endowment or leaving a bequest
of any amount please contact Lesley
Mills, Acting Executive Director, at 858-535-1111, ext. 3133.

- Provide a variety of worship opportunities
- Make available an outstanding array of child and adult education programs
- Offer interfaith programs and outreach to the unaffiliated
- Reach out to those in need through social action and community service
- Share our support of Israel
|
Dues are simply not enough.
By giving to Beth Israel
you help us
to continue our important work. |
| Make a contribution today. |
The generousity of others
is what allows us to welcome all
regardless of means. |
|
Our heritage has been carefully and lovingly preserved by those who came before
us. We are the inheritors of a proud past and now it is our turn to help secure
the future.
We have formed the Dor l' Dor Society (Generation to Generation)
to honor those who have either made an outright endowment gift to the Congregation,
become Life Members or have told us they have included the synagogue in their
estate plan. These gifts help build our Endowment Fund and ensure that our
synagogue remains a cornerstone of Jewish life in San Diego and the nation.
A gift in your will involves little sacrifice in the present, but guarantees
our Jewish future. Our legacy, indeed our responsibility, is to follow in
the footsteps of our predecessors, keeping our synagogue vibrant for our children
and grandchildren.
Please add your name to the growing list of Dor l’Dor Society members
and help us plan for generations to come.
Please contact Lesley Mills, Acting Executive Director, at 858-535-1111, ext. 3133.

Why Endowment Giving?
By Rabbi Paul Citrin
As others planted for me, so I am planting
for the generations who come after me.
These words are the response of an old man to a youth who asked why he was
planting a carob sapling whose fruit would take seventy years to appear.
Our heritage has been carefully and lovingly preserved by those who came before
us. We today partake of the fruit of their labors as we avail ourselves of the
blessings our Congregation Beth Israel provides for us. It is incumbent upon
us to secure a vibrant Jewish future for the generations who will follow us.
Throughout its long and distinguished history, Congregation Beth Israel has served
as a gathering place, a place to worship, to be inspired and to seek answers
through study and a commitment to a just and better world. We have inherited
the spiritual and social foundations created by preceding generations. Our legacy,
indeed our responsibility, is to take what we know and pass it on to our children
and grandchildren.
We are a Congregation that has seen its members, over more than 14 decades, carry
out a commitment to sustain synagogue life. We must continue this commitment
because the synagogue is the dominant force in shaping Jewish identity and sustaining
our people.
Congregation Beth Israel is deeply engaged in this sacred work through numerous
programs of youth, family and adult education, caring community support, social
action, outreach to mixed married families, religious school and preschool education.
To maintain and strengthen these needed programs we must make provisions for
our future.
Membership dues alone are not sufficient to support our current and anticipated
needs. This is so because Congregation Beth Israel accepts any Jewish family
seeking synagogue affiliation regardless of ability to meet our dues schedule.
This is as it should be in our effort to sustain Jewish life, learning and communal
experience for our children and grandchildren. go to top |
