Southern California's oldest Jewish congregation now has the most up-to-date Web site. CBISD.org has one-click navigation to many popular features, sections on youth, joining and giving and continually updated content nearly everywhere on the site. For staff, an intranet provides frequently used forms and manuals.
Here are the primary features of Congregation Beth Israel’s Web site:
- Drill down quickly to information you need: Dropdown navigation menus allow you to visit virtually any page in the site with one click from anywhere. Just mouse over any of the top buttons and all the available page options will appear.
- Top level buttons for Youth, Membership and Giving: These areas of the Web site draw attention to the synagogue’s renewed focus on the important areas of youth programming, joining CBI and donating to CBI.
- Contact info for committee chairs: Under Contact CBI you’ll find a list of Committee Chairs so you can quickly find out who to call to become involved in a club, activity, or event.
- Enhanced Calendars section: The Calendars section provides calendars for all CBI’s schools, youth programs and the monthly worship calendar, in addition to the main temple calendar. A Jewish holiday calendar appears in both the Calendars section and the Worship section, providing dates for the two years out.
- An expanded Early Childhood section: In the Schools area, mouse over Early Childhood to choose from the available pages.
- Specialized information from the URJ: Our site includes resources provided and updated by the Union for Reform Judaism, such as Shabbat Resources (in the Worship section), the Portion of the Week (on the Torah Study page in Worship), Youth & Family News (in the Youth section) and News from the Religious Action Center (on the Social Action ongoing projects page). The URJ’s content flows directly into CBISD.org for the convenience of our users.
- A Forms Library: The Forms Library is the place to RSVP for programs, classes and quickly locate frequently used forms for membership, donations, and joining a chavurah.
- An Intranet for CBI staff: The For Staff section contains manuals and forms that employees frequently need. Staff in the Human Human Resources Department makes available to staff the logins and passwords needed to access this area.
CBISD.org's content is updated almost every day by CBI Webmaster Karen Shein Christiansen, CBI staff members and volunteers. Web Developer Emily Jennewein maintains and develops
the site's design, navigation and functionality.

Printing Pages of the CBI Web Site
If you try to print a Web page and the text is cut off at the right margin,
there are two workarounds, both of which should make the CBI pages print
fully.
Reduce the margins as follows:
- On the File menu, click Page Setup .
- Under Margins, type 0 in the Left box and 0 in the Right box
- Click OK
- Print the page
Alternatively, direct your printer to print in Landscape mode as follows:
- On the File menu, click Page Setup
- Under Orientation, click Landscape
- Click OK
- Print the page
The printing problem results from a known bug in IE for Windows.
It happens to every Web site that is built to 800x600 pixels (which is nearly
every site). Microsoft has a page about it in the support area of its Web site: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;260642 .

CBI Web Site Background
This Beth Israel Web site was designed in the summer of 2002 and launched in
October 2002. The home page has been redesigned twice since to make it more
newsy and current. Many pages have been added over time to increase the information
available to Congregants and the public. A total redesign in 2005 introduced
dropdown navigation and rich media audio recordings of cantillation and prayers.
Emily Jennewein built the site for the temple under the leadership and guidance
of Board of Directors member Wayne Schwartz, Past President Jerry Goldberg
and Executive Director Emeritus Stuart Simmons. Many staff people, members and volunteers
provided valuable information, organizing and editing assistance for the Web
site. She served as Webmaster for four years, until June 2006,
when Gary Hirschfeld assumed the position. In October of 2007, Karen Shein Christiansen became Webmaster.
