OUR RABBINIC SEARCH BEGINS
octoBER 2006
By Barbara Haworth, President, 2005-07
The Rabbinic Search Committee has begun its work of finding CBI's next senior rabbi. The 12-member committee comprises a talented group of congregants who represent each and every area of temple life, every demographic group, and many professional experiences.
Applying the vision gleaned from the long-range planning process, we are looking for a senior rabbi who is excited by the idea of prioritizing 'community' and 'connectedness' and about the prospect of guiding and inspiring us.
CBI's Bylaws call for the president to co-chair the Search Committee and to appoint a co-chair and a minimum of ten other members. The Bylaws also strictly limit the number of CBI Board members who can serve on this committee relative to the total size of the committee: no more than three members of the committee plus the president may be Board members. Of the group, only Co-Chair Sandy Feldman has served on a prior search committee for a senior rabbi.
The candidates for the search committee were carefully considered from a variety of sources. Some were recommended, some were self-nominated and others were recruited after a review of our entire membership roster. We sought to carefully balance skills in interviewing, human resource management, professional recruitment, psychological evaluation, and organizational management with a deep understanding of temple life.
Committee members have committed to absolute confidentiality in keeping with the rabbinic placement rules, weekly Sunday meetings for an indefinite period of time and the willingness to do many hours of work outside committee meetings.
An innovation for this search is the Search Advisory Committee, which will operate in parallel with the Search Committee and will perform much of the work that was done by previous search committees themselves. This committee will involve as many congregants as possible in tasks ranging from meeting prospective candidates and their families, familiarizing them with our congregation and the San Diego Jewish community, answering their questions, and background checking. The Search Advisory Committee will not be restricted in size.
We will also be introducing the dedicated Rabbinic Search section of the CBI Web site, which will soon be available at www.cbisd.org/search. Information about the Search will be regularly updated and congregants may submit comments and questions. An enormous amount of effort has been put into designing this Web site to keep you posted on the search status at all times. I would like to thank Emily Jennewein for an absolutely gigantic labor of love to offer you real time status as the search progresses. I encourage you to visit the Search section of our Web site often for regular updates so that you can stay well informed and contact the Search Committee. We value your input and look forward to hearing from you.
