Introduction
Since 1986, the CBI Hunger Project, in partnership with St. Vincent de Paul Village, has served over 900,000 meals to those in need in the general San Diego community. Founded originally by CBI member Joan Kutner, the Hunger Project helps close to 700 people each week, providing a warm, nourishing meal to young and old alike, across all ethnicities and religions, from the homeless to those who must make the difficult choice between whether to buy essential medicine or their next meal. When this most basic of human needs is met, there is renewed hope and dignity.

who bring good report cards are rewarded with donated gifts and new school
supplies. |

How to Volunteer
 |
|
| Guests include families, the elderly,
the mentally and physically disabled, individual down on their luck and
the poor and homeless. CBI serves a balanced meal that includes a nutritious
hot soup. |
The Hunger Project needs volunteers every Sunday morning. Vicki Raun, the CBI Hunger Project's volunteer scheduler is ready to hear from you.
Contact Vicki via email or call and leave a message at 858-535-1111 ext. 3500. Please include the following information: your name, phone number and email address, and at least three possible dates on which you are interested in volunteering.
The volunteer hours for the Hunger Project are Sundays from 9:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. Volunteers will arrive at the Paul Mirable Center at St. Vincent de Paul by 9:00 a.m. to set up, serve brunch from 9:30 until 11:00, and then clean up until 11:30 a.m. Long-time Hunger Project staffer Bill Connors will meet and greet volunteers each Sunday and provide a brief orientation before work begins.
We need you to continue to volunteer. If you are part of a committee, chavurah or other CBI group, consider providing the 12-15 volunteers needed for a Sunday. This can build great teamwork while doing a mitzvah for the community.
Volunteers must be at least 12 years old and be accompanied by a parent if under 18. The Hunger Project continues to be a great way for Bar/Bat Mitzvah students to fulfill a portion of their Ma'aseh Mitzvah requirements.

How You Can Help
The Hunger Project is totally supported by voluntary contributions. We cannot do this work without the support of donors! By supporting the Hunger Project, we help those less fortunate. For example a $50 donation provides a warm, nutritious meal for 20 individuals while a $500 gift feeds almost 200 people. At whatever gift level, it is the generosity that helps CBI continue providing this crucial service. To contribute today, please download the Hunger Project gift envelope and send to Congregation Beth Israel, 9001 Towne Centre Drive, San Diego, CA 92122, attention: Development Department.

The CBI Joan Kutner Social Action
Award
This perpetual award was created by the CBI Board in 2005 to recognize the
contribution of Joan Kutner, the director of the CBI San Diego Hunger Project,
in recognition of her almost 20 years of service to the San Diego community.
Joan has since retired from the Hunger Project, but the award was named for her because her endeavors embodied the Jewish values the award is intended to honor. CBI will present the Joan Kutner Social Action Award from time to time to outstanding individuals in recognition of their service and dedication to social action and tikkun olam in both the Jewish and general communities.
