| Carl M. Esenoff established high standards of extraordinary community service. |
Congregation Beth Israel presents the Carl M. Esenoff Memorial Award for Extraordinary Community Service from time to time to outstanding Jewish individuals in recognition of their service to the Jewish and general communities. Recipients are residents of San Diego County who maintain a meaningful membership in Congregation Beth Israel and have been active in, supportive of, and demonstrated leadership in the synagogue, the United Jewish Federation, and one or more other Jewish organizations. Recipients also have demonstrated leadership in cultural arts, welfare, business, professional, and/or political activities organizations of the general community. In March of 2004, Congregation Beth Israel honored Mary Ann Scher, making her the most recent recipient of the award. Mary Ann has 20-plus years of leadership experience and achievement in the San Diego Jewish community including serving as President of the Board of Beth Israel from 1992-95, chairing the Dedication Weekend for the synagogue's new campus in the fall of 2001 and serving as Associate co-chair of the New Building Capital Campaign. Mary Ann has also served as president of the United Jewish Federation of San Diego, Campaign Chair of the UJF, and President of the Women's Division of UJF, as well as chairing and serving on numerous committees dedicated to fundraising for Jewish causes.
