DCL Search Committee Members
The Search Committee is composed of nine congregants and Rabbi Berk. We are a diverse group including a high school student, a judge, a writer, a college professor, Jewish educators, public school educator, pediatrician, human resources experts and a Rabbi.

Rabbi Michael Berk joined CBI as Senior Rabbi in July 2007. From 1997 to 2007 he served as Regional Director, Pacific Central West Council, for the Union of Reform Judaism. Previously, Rabbi Berk served three other California congregations. Rabbi Berk was ordained in 1980 at Hebrew Union College and Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati, Ohio Rabbi Michael Berk is married to Rabbi Aliza Berk who was recently appointed to direct the Jewish Healing Center at Jewish Family Service.

Barbara Lounsbury is the chair of the DCL Search Committee. She is a developmental and behavioral pediatrician who works part-time at Kaiser Permanente. She earned her B.A. from Harvard University and her M.D. from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. Barbara is a Jew-by-choice, who converted to Judaism before marrying Jonathan who is an internist. They have three teenagers, Max, Rebecca and Benjamin, who became b'nai mitzvah at CBI. Becca and Ben attend the religious school and sing in the choir.

At Congregation Beth Israel, Barbara served on the Education sub-committee of the Long-Range Planning Committee, Rabbinic Search Committee that selected Rabbi Michael Berk and the Infant Care Task Force. She is a member of the CBI Board of Directors. Bob Filderman worked in senior management positions at EF Hutton, Shearson Bros, and Prudential Securities. Bob graduated from Dartmouth College and completed a tour of duty as an officer in the US Army. At CBI, Bob served on the Rabbinic Search Committee that selected Rabbi Michael Berk. He is serving on the CBI Board of Directors. Bob and his wife Marilyn are members of a Chavurah and joined CBI in 1982 when they moved to San Diego.

Lisa Foster is a Judge of the Superior Court of San Diego County. Prior to becoming a Judge in 2003, she spent 17 years practicing and teaching public interest law in a variety of settings.

Lisa is a lifelong member of Congregation Beth Israel, where she became a bat mitzvah and was confirmed. She is the mother of three girls, two of whom currently attend CBI's high school program. She is married to Alan Bersin.

Cynthia Fram has worked in the Human Resources field for over 15 years. She is the Human Resources Generalist for the United Way of San Diego County. She earned her B.A. in communications from The University of Oregon and her Certificate in Human Resources Management from University of California at San Diego. Cynthia grew up in Portland, Oregon, and moved to San Diego in 1995.

At Congregation Beth Israel, Cynthia has served on the Long Range Planning Committee, the Rabbinic Search Committee that selected Rabbi Michael Berk, the Preschool Parent Committee, and is a Chavurah coordinator. Cynthia is now involved with the Parent Committee at our Religious School, her daughter Maia is in Kindergarten at the religious school. She is also serving her first year on the CBI Board of Directors. Her husband, Howard Fram, is a life-long member of CBI. Audrey Levine grew up in Phoenix, AZ and holds a BS in Business Administration from Arizona State University and an MAEd from the University of Judaism. She has also earned her RJE (Reform Jewish Educator) accredidation from the URJ.

Audrey and her husband Steve have two children, Samantha, age 11, and Evan, age 7. Samantha currently attends the CBI Religous School, sings in the choir and will celebrate her Bat Mitzvah in Israel this summer on the CBI Choir trip. Evan is a graduate of the CBI Preschool. Audrey and Steve have been members at CBI for 6 years.

Liz Levine has served as Vice President, Education at CBI for three years. She is a freelance writer and editor. Liz and her husband, Andrew, have been members of CBI since 1985, when they moved to San Diego. Their two children, Kivu and Miri, became B'nai Mitzvah in early 2005.

Liz chaired the congregation's Mission Statement Task Force in 2001, an assistant rabbi search and day school task force in 2005, and the Education Subcommittee of the Long Range Strategic Plan in 2006. She also served as chair of the ALEINU/Adult Learners Network steering committee and was on both the 2003-04 and 1993 Senior Rabbi Search Committees.

Liz was honored in 1994 as CBI's Volunteer of the Year and in 2006 with the Maht Mid award. She was a member of the Advisory Committee for the Woman's Institute for Continuing Jewish Education in San Diego and edited one of its pioneering books, A Ceremonies Sampler: New Rites, Celebrations and Observances of Jewish Women.

Liz was born and grew up in Fort Worth, Texas. She earned a B.A. with a double major in religion and journalism from Trinity University, where she graduated summa cum laude and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and an M.A. in Jewish studies from Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati. Samara Muller-Peters is a junior at High Tech High School. At school and out of school, Samara is actively involved in the community. This year, some of her activities include serving on the J-Serve (Jewish teen day of service) planning council and editing her school yearbook.

Samara joined CBI at the age of five. She attended Beth Israel Day School for several years and then transferred to the religious school. After her Bat Mitzvah, she attended CBI's high school program and was confirmed last year. She has been a member of the CBI youth choir since she joined the congregation and she plans to accompany the choir on their trip to Israel this summer. Samara served on the Revisioning Education at CBI Taskforce in 2007.

Beth Tabor has been an elementary school educator in the Escondido Union School District for the last 18 years. Prior to that, she worked in the private sector in Arizona and Pennsylvania. Beth received her B.S. at the University of Pittsburgh in Child Development with a minor in Theater Arts. She later completed her teaching credential at San Diego State University. She served on the hiring panel during the foundation of SUAVE, a professional development program committed to infusing fine arts into the public education curriculum. Later, she was part of the interview panel to select a new principal for her school. She currently is an active member of the VAPA committee in her district.

For the last three years, Beth has served on the Religious School Parent Committee at CBI. She is married and has two children in the religious school.

Joellyn Wallen Zollman holds a Ph.D. in Jewish history from Brandeis University. Her dissertation, completed in 2002, is a history of American synagogue gift shops. This topic incorporates two of her areas of specialization, Jewish art and Jewish history. Professionally, Dr. Zollman has worked with the Jewish material culture collections at the Smithsonian Institution, the Skirball Museum, and The American Jewish Historical Society. She is frequently a lecturer in the History Department at San Diego State University, where she teaches Modern Jewish History and American Jewish History.

Joellyn is married to Ron Zollman and they have two children, Zachary, a Bill and Sid Rubin preschool graduate who currently attends Religious School at CBI, and Aliza, who attends BIBs.
