Marty Klitzner
Marty Klitzner    
Marty Klitzner received his undergraduate and MBA degrees from the University of Michigan. In addition, he did three years of post-graduate work in economics at UCLA. For the past 25 years Marty has been Managing Director of Sunrise Capital Partners, an alternative investment hedge fund manager.

Marty has served for many years as a Board member of the United Jewish Federation and on the Executive Committee as its Treasurer. He also serves on the Jewish Community Foundation of San Diego Board and is the current chair of its Grants Committee. Marty has been a member of CBI for 25 years. He and his wife, Terry, were married at CBI and his son, Lee, had his bar mitzvah at the temple as well.
Liz Levine
Liz Levine    
Liz Levine, VP, Education, is a freelance writer/editor. She and her husband, Andrew, have been members of CBI since 1985, when they moved to San Diego. Their two children, Kivu and Miri, became B'nai Mitzvah in early 2005.

Liz currently serves on the Board of Directors as Vice President for Education. She chaired the congregation's Mission Statement Task Force in 2001, and has served as chair of the ALEINU/Adult Learners Network steering committee. She is a member of the ALEINU Committee, the Religious School Committee, and the T'fillah/Worship Committee.

Previously, she was involved with the Kehillah/Caring Community Committee, the Career Women's Network, and the (pararabbinic) Human Resources Program, as well as serving on the 2003-04 and 1993 Senior Rabbi Search Committees.

Liz was honored in 1994 as CBI's Volunteer of the Year. She was a member of the Advisory Committee for the Woman's Institute for Continuing Jewish Education in San Diego and edited one of its pioneering books, A Ceremonies Sampler: New Rites, Celebrations and Observances of Jewish Women.

Liz was born and grew up in Fort Worth, Texas. She earned a B.A. with a double major in religion and journalism from Trinity University, where she graduated summa cum laude and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and an M.A. in Jewish studies from Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati.
Leona (Lee) Levy
Lee Levy    
Leona (Lee) Levy, and her husband, Jerome (Jerry) Levy, Capt.MC, USN,ret., lived in nine U.S. cities, Japan and Iceland before settling permanently in San Diego. They have four sons, two of whom celebrated Bar Mitzvah at CBI. Their extended family now includes sons, spouses and eight grandchildren living in various locations between Pt. Loma and Singapore.

The Levys have been members of CBI since 1970. During this time, Lee has served on the Aleinu, Kehillah/Caring Community, Worship Committees and the Membership Sub-Committee of Long Term Planning. She is also a Life Member of Hadassah, a member of the Shabbat Havurah , WBI and the Mental Health Committee of JFS.

Jewish Family Service honored Lee with The Jack Stern Volunteer of the Year Recognition Award. She continues to support and consult at the Jewish Healing Center and facilitate bereavement groups. She presently coordinates the Bikkur Cholim program for the Kehilah/Caring Community Committee which she has chaired in the past. Currently she serves as co-chair of Membership.

Lee has enjoyed professional careers as a nurse, educator and social worker. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from the University of Connecticut, a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies degree from Wesleyan University and a Master of Social Work degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Jerry Levy serves on the Board of the Men's Club and as a member of the committee that selected Senior Rabbi Michael Berk. The Levys live in Point Loma and invite all newcomers to visit their part of San Diego.

Barbara Lounsbury, M.D.
Barbara Lounsbury, M.D.    
Barbara Lounsbury is a Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrician, evaluating and helping children who have developmental or learning problems. She currently works part-time at Kaiser Permanente and serves as family chauffeur.

At Congregation Beth Israel, Barbara served on the Rabbinic Search Committee that selected Rabbi Michael Berk. She also recently served on the Education sub-committee of the Long Range Planning Committee. She and her family feel blessed to be part of the CBI community and committed to its long term growth.

Barbara is a Jew-by-choice, who converted to Judaism before marrying her husband, Jonathan. Barbara grew up in Arizona. She earned her B.A. from Harvard University and her M.D. from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. Following residency and fellowship training, she and her husband moved to San Diego. She previously worked at UCSD in the department of Pediatrics, and in private practice before joining Kaiser. Barbara Lubin
Barbara Lubin    
Barbara Lubin and her family have been members of Beth Israel for 20 years. She is also a member of the Jewish Family Service Board of Directors and has co-chaired the JFS gala for the past two years. Barbara is a Board member of the Women’s Division of the United Jewish Federation and serves on the Jewish in La Jolla Steering Committee. She is a founding member of the Jewish Women’s Foundation, a program of the Jewish Community Foundation.

Barbara worked professionally in the cosmetics industry where she used her retail and communication skills to teach and motivate individuals to be passionate about and to achieve their goals. Barbara was the West Coast cosmetics educator and trainer for Tigi Cosmetics and then represented Prescriptives Cosmetics as a manager and trainer for five years.

Barbara grew up in Los Angeles and moved to San Diego in 1993. She is married to Jeffrey Lubin, and their children attended the Beth Israel Day School and Religious School and both became b’nai mitzvah at Beth Israel. Barbara and Jeffrey established an education fund at Beth Israel to help families continue their children’s Jewish education. She and her husband own Scripps Investments and Loans, Inc., a private lending company in La Jolla. Their son, Bryan, works with them, and their daughter, Allison, now lives in New York and is a fashion coordinator. Meg Mandel
meg mandelOriginally from Altoona, Pennsylvania, Meg Mandel has been a member of CBI since she and her family moved to San Diego from Iowa in 2006. Meg is a co-chair of the Religious School Room Parent Committee and recently participated on the Education Task Force. Meg also serves on the Membership Committee and is participating in CBI’s Leadership Development program.

In addition to her involvement with CBI, Meg is on the Board of the Women’s Division of UJF, serves as co-chair of the La Jolla Lunch Club, and volunteers at Torrey Pines Elementary School coordinating the Everyone A Reader program and helping to facilitate the Kids Care Club.

Meg graduated from Brown University with a B.A. in American Civilization and earned an M.A.T. from Rice University. Her professional background is in college admission, education, and fundraising. Meg lives in La Jolla with her husband, Jess, and their two children, Emily and Jonathan. Meryl C. Maneker
meryl manekerMeryl is an attorney in private practice and a partner in the San Diego law firm of Wilson Petty Kosmo & Turner. Meryl specializes in the defense of employment class actions and product liability claims. In addition to her practice, Meryl is an active member of the San Diego legal community. Meryl is a former president of the San Diego chapter of the Federal Bar Association and currently serves as Treasurer and a member of the Board of Directors of Lawyers Club of San Diego. She is also currently a Lawyer Representative to the Southern District of California.

A native of New York, Meryl graduated from Brown University and New York University School of Law. Meryl and her family moved to San Diego in 1996 and have been members of CBI since 1997. At CBI, Meryl has served on the Membership Committee and the recent Assistant Rabbi Search Committee. Meryl and her husband, Peter Herman, a professor of English and Comparative Literature at San Diego State University, have two children, Alison (age 15) and Jonathan (age 9), who are members of CBI’s Teen and Youth Choir. Jonathan is a graduate of CBI’s preschool and currently attends CBI’s Religious School which Alison also attended. The entire family went to Israel last summer with Cantor Bernstein’s Teen and Youth Choir Trip. Robert Metz
Robert Metz    
After graduating Wayne University in Detroit with a degree in Business Administration, Bob started a window manufacturing company. He served on the national Board of the Architectural Aluminum Manufacturers Association and the United Way of Oakland County, Michigan. Fifteen years later he sold his business and ventured into commercial real estate, soon becoming a VP of the Detroit Board of Realtors. Bob moved to San Diego in 1976 where he pioneered the consumer video industry. In 1980 he became an owner and CFO at Voice & Video Inc., a respected commercial video equipment sales organization. Bob joined the Torrey Pines Kiwanis Club as a charter member in 1982. He has been on their Board for over 27 years and was the president of the club in 1987. He was a co-founder of The La Jolla Festival of Arts, a fund raising project of the club, and served as the Site Chairman for 22 years and as General Chairman in 2001. He was treasurer of the Torrey Pines Kiwanis Foundation for over 10 years and is a member of the Foundation Board and the Investment Committee.

In 1996 Bob and his wife Judy joined Congregation Beth Israel and immediately became involved in Temple activities. In 2001 he co-chaired the Social Action Committee. He was co-founder of the Stand With Israel Committee and its Adopt-A-Family program. Bob continues to be an active member of both of these committees. He was named Volunteer of the Year for 2002/03.

With his wife Judy, they served on the Shalom Committee for 8 years. Bob rescued a slipping Christmas Day CBI tradition and re-named it "Volunteer for a Volunteer" and has led it for the past 10 years. He also founded the CBI-USO Project and Cafe Beth Israel, and has been an active participant and leader in many other CBI programs throughout the years. Bob joined Beth Israel's Men's Club Board and was elected as their president for the term July 2007, through June 2009. He served on the Temple Board during this term. Bob has two children, Bill a La Jolla architect, and Ellen Friedman a physical therapist residing in Phoenix, and he has two adult grandchildren.
