Barbara
Buchstane Haworth, Immediate Past President
Barbara Buchstane Haworth served as President from 2005-07 and led the congregation through a period of change. During her presidency, she led the searches for a new Senior Rabbi and also for a new Assistant Rabbi. One of her most proud accomplishments was to successfully complete a long term contract with our beloved Cantor Arlene Bernstein. Additionally, Barbara oversaw the hiring of Lesley Mills as the Congregation’s first Development Director and then her subsequent move to become the Acting Executive Director. Barbara envisioned and directed the process of long range planning as the means to align congregational resources with member needs in a comprehensive, fluid and continuing effort. . The congregational emphasis on “Community and Connectedness” was the result of this work.
During Barbara’s presidency, various task forces were commissioned and changes were made as a result of their findings. For example the youth director was added to the staff, three vibrant youth groups emerged and the teen lounge was opened and activated. Also, the membership function was examined which resulted in redefining the staff positions. Financial resources and operational capacity was a major focus and the endowment grew by over $1 million, or 17%. Planned giving was emphasized and Congregation Beth Israel is now prominently included in many of our member’s estate plans.
Prior to her presidency, Barbara was actively involved at Congregation Beth Israel for many years. She was Vice President of Education for three years, and has chaired numerous committees including Nominating, Fundraising, and Religious School. She was named CBI Volunteer of the Year in 2002.
Barbara has also held several other leadership positions in the Jewish communities of both San Diego and Chicago. She was active in United Jewish Federation where she served on the Board of Directors and also was Vice President of Women’s Division. She was on the Board of the JCC for eight years and served in several capacities there. She was named the JCC's Volunteer of the Year in 1995. She served on the Board of Hillel and various committees for many other Jewish organizations. She is an alumna of the Wexner Heritage Foundation and was one of the founders of the San Diego Wexner Graduate Leadership Institute which ultimately brought the Wexner Heritage Foundation program back to San Diego for a repeat program in 2003.
Barbara was the San Diego County Fundraising Chair for Diabetic Youth Services, which operates a resident camp near Big Bear for children with diabetes. She created the very successful fundraiser, "Stars Cook for Camp," which was held in 2002 and 2004. In 2001, Barbara, her husband Gordon, and their children were honored as "Family of the Year" by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. She also served in various capacities in her children's schools.
Barbara was raised in Alabama and received her undergraduate degree from Tulane University and her MBA from the University of Texas at Austin. She began her business career in Chicago, first in commercial banking then in commercial real estate where she was a partner and Senior Vice President of LaSalle Partners (now Jones Lang LaSalle).
In 1992, she and her husband, Gordon, moved to San Diego where they have invested in real estate and other business opportunities. Barbara is a partner in Grahamanda Development. Barbara and Gordon have two children and live in La Jolla.
