Board of Directors Elections
Pursuant to the Congregation’s By-Laws the number of Elected Board Members shall be fixed from time to time by the Board of Directors . For the upcoming election, the Board has set the number to be 21 members. The names below are being recommended to the membership for election at this meeting. Four are current Board Members who are being re-nominated. Four are being nominated for the first time. Brief biographies of the nominees will accompany the Final Notice of Annual Meeting.

Nominating Committee
Elections
The 2006-07 Nominating Committee was composed of seven individuals; four elected by the Congregation and three appointed by the President following the Annual Meeting.
Current elected members are: Jeff Silberman, Chair (1st term), Cindy Polger (1st term), Ann Campbell (3rd term), Gladie Jaffe (1st term). Current appointed members are: Jack Berkman (2nd term), Debbie Skomer (1st term), Jerry Rosen (1st term). Ex-Officio: Barbara Haworth, Amy Corton.
Candidates for Elected Positions on the 2008-09 Nominating Committee (1 Year Term) are: Barbara Haworth, Chair, (2nd term), Terri Bignell (1st term), Jerry Rosen (3rd term) Gary Hirschfeld (1st term).

Biographies of Candidates for the
Board of Directors
Sherwin Chasen
Sherwin and his wife Lynette retired in 1999, and moved to Carlsbad from Kansas City. They have been active members of CBI since 2000, are coordinators for their Chavurah, host the Shalom Table, have participated in many social action projects, and Kehillah Callers. Sherwin has been active in various other volunteer work including serving as Membership Chairman and member of the Board of his Kansas City congregation (B’nai Jehudah), Board Member of Junior Achievement, volunteer for Big Brothers, Big Pals, and Special Olympics, and most recently coordinated all the volunteer training for the URJ Biennial.
Originally born in Chicago, Sherwin and his family moved to Kansas City in 1973 to assume the position of Director of Marketing for United Computing Systems (a division of Sprint), and later became VP of Human Resources and Strategic Planning. The last 12 years prior to retirement, Sherwin was VP Strategic Planning for a division of Total, a major international chemical company, where he was responsible for strategic and business planning and new business development. Sherwin earned an MBA degree from Rockhurst College.
Lynette and Sherwin were married in 1960, have two married sons, , and six grandchildren. Their elder son Jeffrey, an attorney, is the President and COO of a human resources training company in Tulsa, OK. Their younger son, Kenneth, is Senior Rabbi of the Leo Baeck Temple in Los Angeles
Amy Corton
Amy Corton, President of the Board, has been involved in Congregation Beth Israel for many years. She served as Treasurer and Vice President of Endowment, and was involved in the Beth Israel Day School Parent Advisory Board when her children attended the school. She was honored as a Volunteer of the Year in 2005.
Amy is a Development and Planning Consultant. She has worked in the past for Planned Parenthood of San Diego and Riverside Counties and built their Planned Giving Program which now has more than 100 members. She also wrote grants for Planned Parenthood and was involved in raising money for their recent Capital Campaign. Prior to working at Planned Parenthood she was the Chair of the Board of Directors from 1996-1998 and served as Treasurer of the Board of Directors prior to becoming Chair.
She has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Women's Division of the United Jewish Federation and is a member of the San Diego Foundation's Women's Foundation where she previously served as Governance Committee Chair.
Amy earned a Law Degree from Emory University School of Law and graduated from Cornell University with a B.A. in Economics. She began her law career in New York City and moved to San Diego in 1988 where she joined Brobeck, Phleger and Harrison as a lawyer.
Amy and her husband, Carl Eibl, have two children and live in La Jolla.

Deb DeBow
Deborah DeBow is a native of the San Francisco/Bay Area and a Cal (UC Berkeley) alumnus. She is married to Herb Weissman, Ph.D., who is a clinical and forensic psychologist and Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at UCD and UCSD. They have one child, Benjamin, who is a sophomore at San Diego Jewish Academy (SDJA). The family moved to San Diego area from Sacramento in 1999, for the quality and variety of life—especially in the arts, the Jewish community, and the educational institutions.
CBI’s educational, religious, musical, and social programs, and its friendly congregation, inspired the Weissman family to join the synagogue four years ago. Deb joined the Social Action Committee in 2005 and is in her second year as its chair. Her focus has been on environmental awareness, including the well-attended programs on global warming and alternative vehicles/fuels.
Deb has been a practicing lawyer since 1978, first in private practice and then as Principal Counsel to the California State Legislature’s Assembly Judiciary Committee. In San Diego, she uses her lawyer skills part-time in various family business activities. She served as the President of the Sacramento County Bar Association in 1995 and before that as president of the Sacramento Law Foundation, Sacramento Women Lawyers, and Feminist Legal Services (co-founder).
An avid environmentalist, gardener, and lawyer, Deb combines these interests by representing the California Native Plant Society (San Diego Chapter) on the Citizens Advisory Board of the San Dieguito River Park and also on its Plan Review Committee. She has been active in the SDJA PTO, serving in various capacities.
Emily Jennewein
Emily Jennewein, Secretary and VP, Communications of the CBI Board, is Director of Marketing and Communications for the Jewish Community Foundation of San Diego. She was formerly a Web developer, building Web sites for business clients. She built CBI's Web site in 2002, and served as the synagogue's volunteer Webmaster for four years.
Emily lives in Del Mar with her husband Chris, who runs SignOnSanDiego.com, the Internet operation of the San Diego Union Tribune. Their daughters, Maddy and Penny became b'not mitzvah in June 2005.
At Beth Israel, Emily is chair of the Cantor Bernstein 10th anniversary event committee. She sat on the rabbinic search committee that selected Rabbi Michael Berk. Emily chaired the Religious School parent committee for several years. She designed CBI's current weekly E-Newsletter, which debuted in 2004. She was honored as a CBI Volunteer of the Year in 2003, and served on the Capitol Steps fundraiser committee. She co-chaired the search for Assistant Rabbi Glenn Ettman in 2006 and co-chaired the committee that produced the One People Many Voices youth choir concert in 2006.
She earned an M.B.A. from the Amos Tuck School of Business Administration at Dartmouth College and graduated from Amherst College with a B.A. in English. She was a banking and economic reporter for The Miami Herald and The Atlanta Constitution and held management positions at The Coca-Cola Company in corporate communications and shareholder services. Emily grew up in Washington, D.C.

Marty Klitzner
Marty Klitzner received his undergraduate and MBA degrees from the University of Michigan. In addition, he did three years of post-graduate work in economics at UCLA. For the past 25 years Marty has been Managing Director of Sunrise Capital Partners, an alternative investment hedge fund manager.
Marty has served for many years as a Board member of the United Jewish Federation and on the Executive Committee as its Treasurer. He also serves on the Jewish Community Foundation of San Diego Board and is the current chair of its Grants Committee. Marty has been a member of CBI for 25 years. He and his wife, Terry, were married at CBI and his son, Lee, had his bar mitzvah at the temple as well.
Barbara Lubin
Barbara Lubin and her family have been members of Beth Israel for 20 years. She is also a member of the Jewish Family Service Board of Directors and has co-chaired the JFS gala for the past two years. Barbara is a Board member of the Women’s Division of the United Jewish Federation and serves on the Jewish in La Jolla Steering Committee. She is a founding member of the Jewish Women’s Foundation, a program of the Jewish Community Foundation.
Barbara worked professionally in the cosmetics industry where she used her retail and communication skills to teach and motivate individuals to be passionate about and to achieve their goals. Barbara was the West Coast cosmetics educator and trainer for Tigi Cosmetics and then represented Prescriptives Cosmetics as a manager and trainer for five years.
Barbara grew up in Los Angeles and moved to San Diego in 1993. She is married to Jeffrey Lubin, and their children attended the Beth Israel Day School and Religious School and both became b’nai mitzvah at Beth Israel. Barbara and Jeffrey established an education fund at Beth Israel to help families continue their children’s Jewish education. She and her husband own Scripps Investments and Loans, Inc., a private lending company in La Jolla. Their son, Bryan, works with them, and their daughter, Allison, now lives in New York and is a fashion coordinator.

Jerry Sampson
Jerry Sampson and his wife Lynn have been active members of CBI since 1988, where they were married. Together they are raising two children, Rachel, a member of the 2005 Confirmation Class, and Jacob, a recent Bar Mitzvah.
Jerry has served on the T'filah/Worship Committee and the Aleinu Committee. As a volunteer, he also enjoys welcoming and greeting visitors and members to numerous Congregation events and activities.
For more than 20 years, Jerry has been a procurement, contracts, and materials management professional for a San Diego firm. He is a graduate of Arizona State University with a major in Business Administration and Production Operations Management. Jerry was born and raised in the Chicago suburb of Skokie, Illinois.
Molly Schneider
Molly Schneider is a transplanted Detroiter who came to San Diego to attend UCSD in 1986 and stayed for the sunshine. She’s been active in the Jewish community since moving here, first serving as campus liaison for AIPAC and then chairing the young leadership division of AIPAC for 2 years.
She’s been involved in the Bill and Sid Rubin preschool since her children began attending in 2001. She is on the Stand with Israel Committee at CBI, and was recently selected to join the Women’s Division Board for UJF.
Molly has been self employed in the baby clothes business for many years and currently manages a Web site business, babymonograms.com. Molly, and husband Jon, live in Carmel Valley with their three children.
